However, football is not a popular activity in Alaska, which is better known for winter sports such as ice hockey, cross-country skiing, and Arctic sports. Basketball has carved itself a particular place in the hearts of the people of Alaska’s rough and boundless wilderness, where the Northern Lights dance in the winter sky. Despite the state’s cold reputation, the warmth and thrill of the sport flourish indoors, particularly during the long, dark winters. High school basketball is especially popular, with the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) hosting heated state finals that reflect the community’s enthusiasm. One of the most prominent events is the Mount Marathon Race in Seward, a gruelling 3.1-mile race that climbs and descends Mount Marathon’s steep slopes, attracting athletes from all over the world. The University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks also provide collegiate excitement, battling furiously in NCAA Division II. Swimming in Alaska has received widespread attention, particularly with Lydia Jacoby’s unprecedented performances in 2021. Lydia Jacoby, the first Alaskan swimmer to join the USA Olympic swimming squad, made news by capturing the Olympic 100m breaststroke gold medal in Tokyo, showing Alaska’s talent on a global scale. Despite training in a tiny town like Seward, Lydia’s devotion and accomplishments have inspired many people.
